Virginia Faces Lawsuit Over Voter Roll Cleanup
Virginia is the latest battleground in a legal fight over voter roll maintenance. Progressive groups, led by the League of Women Voters, have filed a lawsuit against Governor Glenn Youngkin’s administration for removing over 6,000 non-citizens from voter rolls. The lawsuit challenges the legality of these actions under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), creating a political firestorm.
Erin Joyce of the Electoral Process Education Corporation (EPEC) appeared on Friday’s WarRoom and described this legal maneuver as lawfare that pushes the boundaries of who should vote. According to Joyce, "This lawsuit seeks to stop a basic maintenance program that ensures only citizens are voting.” The case brings into question the integrity of Virginia’s elections and highlights efforts to preserve the current system.
Lawfare Activism Against Voter Integrity
The lawsuit is part of a broader effort to undermine election integrity in Virginia by halting the removal of non-citizens from the voter rolls. Joyce explained the activists’ tactic: “They’re trying to brand this as a systemic purge, but these are non-citizens who have no eligibility to be on the rolls in the first place.” The plaintiffs are not claiming specific harm to individual voters, which weakens their argument.
The lawsuit centers on the NVRA, which includes a provision preventing voter roll maintenance 90 days before an election. However, Joyce noted that this provision was originally meant to protect legitimate voters from being removed unfairly, not to keep non-citizens on the rolls. “If you have no right to be on the rolls, this 90-day period shouldn’t apply,” she said.
Virginia’s Push for Election Integrity
Governor Youngkin’s administration, led by Elections Commissioner Susan Beals, has been proactive in cleaning up voter rolls. According to Joyce, Virginia is using data from the DMV and federal databases to ensure that only citizens can vote. “They’ve been working to check with federal codes and databases to make sure non-citizens are filtered out,” she explained.
Virginia is not alone in this effort. States like Texas and Oregon have also purged non-citizens from their voter rolls. Joyce pointed out that in Oregon, over a thousand non-citizens were recently found on voter lists. These states’ efforts are gaining momentum, but they are also being met with fierce resistance from left-wing groups aiming to stop these actions.
Legal Battle Highlights Tensions Over Voting Rights
The lawsuit raises significant questions about who should have the right to vote and whether these progressive groups are attempting to stretch the definition of citizenship. Joyce believes this case is just another example of lawfare activism, where legal challenges are used to “make voting a mockery by pushing the boundaries of who should vote.”
Virginia’s push for election integrity will be a key issue in the coming months as other states follow suit. Joyce emphasized that the lawsuit represents more than just a legal dispute. “This is about ensuring the legitimacy of our elections and making sure only eligible citizens are casting ballots,” she concluded.
The fight for voter integrity in Virginia could set a precedent for similar challenges nationwide.
