Steve Bannon joined Russell Brand on Brand’s Podcast in a riveting dialogue. Together, they delved into populism’s essence and its power to shape society, reflecting on politics’ impact on humanity, spirituality, technology, and quality of life issues. Brand started the show by acknowledging that Bannon was controversial on the left.
“Watch to discover what else we uncovered! It will shock you!” Brand wrote promoting the interview to his audience.
Brand gave Bannon free rein to discuss the reasons for his sometimes contentious reputation with the left. In the end, it seemed Brand had a new respect for Bannon.
One thing they uncovered is that populists on the left like Brand and right-wing populists like Bannon have much in common. “Populism is about using your human agency to make a difference,” Bannon stated.
An idea Brand appeared to support wholeheartedly.
Brand paralleled populist actions with his knowledge of the historical Farmer’s Rights movement. Bannon depicted President Donald Trump’s arrival in Washington as a crusader from the 11th century, both men symbolizing a force challenging established power structures.
Different, but the essence is the same. Notably, Bannon’s WarRoom program on Real America’s Voice focuses on “action, action, action,” which Brand said was a trait he was fascinated by in Bannon.
Populism is a political ideology that emphasizes average people’s interests against the elite or establishment. They uncovered this together. Brand and Bannon are each champions of unique politically marginalized movements, again showing that they are different but the same.
Brand has his popular Stay Free program, and Bannon has his popular WarRoom program. Populist movements historically gain support by addressing the grievances and frustrations of the populace- of the little people- such as economic inequality and threats to national identity, something both the left and right share in agony.
Both Brand and Bannon said they recognize how the elite media tries to dismantle the determination of their respective audiences. Neither man cowered in fear of the pressure upon them to turn and stop talking about empowering the little people.
“I am 100% confident that the Populist movement here in the US and there in the UK will take on the power structures in the future,” Bannon, a former banker, asserted, highlighting his strong belief in the power of populist movements to challenge existing dominant world powers.
Brand, a well-known Hollywood-level celebrity, nodded in agreement.
Brand and Bannon enthusiastically uncovered right-wing and left-wing populism during their discussion, examining their responses to elite failures and possible manifestations. For example, Bannon introduced the concept of “techno-feudalism,” where technology controls society, reminiscent of a modern form of globalism.
Brand and Bannon lamented the loss of individual ownership and autonomy in the face of dominant financial and tech elites. Brand was awed by that.
Their conversation criticized prevailing power structures and ended with a call for greater liberty and individual sovereignty. Again, it was something they shared. Ultimately, what they uncovered may be a path forward because if left and right unite against the elite, far less can stop all of them from claiming victory over their own lives again.
Ultimately, each man stood by their mission to confront the forces seeking to subjugate society.
One viewer who responded to the podcast said it perfectly in the comments: “The Devil is not a Lawbreaker. The Devil is a Lawmaker, and he stacks the deck by making Laws to entrench his own power. To resist the Devil’s will is to break the Devil’s Laws, and the Devil has many unwitting minions who will persecute those who resist the Devil simply because it’s the Law, and we must not break the Law.”
Brand appeared to gain a new appreciation for Bannon’s battle against who Bannon calls the “psychopathic overlords” in the US. In the final moments of the program, the two pledged to make plans for a Brand appearance on the WarRoom. They also discussed areas where they differed; the time isn’t right to walk together down the primrose path just yet.
Time will tell if a bridge can be built to couple the left and the right in one single movement against the elite. If it happens, we know Brand and Bannon will be at the leading font.
