In a Monday event conversation with Steve Bannon, energy expert Dave Walsh came out swining in his criticism of the current green energy agenda. His thoughts on renewable energy, particularly wind and solar, call for action to shift U.S. energy policy. He doesn’t mince words when he describes the green energy push as misguided and unrealistic.
The Green Energy Push: A Trillion Dollar Scam?
The green energy agenda, Walsh argues, is driven by the global elites who want the U.S. to foot the bill for "sustainability” projects. At the recent COP29 summit, leaders pushed for developed nations, like the United States, to commit a staggering $500 billion each year. This money would be funneled to third-world countries to fund climate initiatives.
Walsh called it a "joke,” saying, "They want us to write a $500 billion check every year to go to third-world dictators.” He questions where the U.S. will find this money and whether it should even be our responsibility. “They want us to think that we’ve got this kind of money to give away,” he added, underscoring his frustration.
AI’s Growing Energy Demands: A Reality Check for Green Energy
One of Walsh’s main points was about the growing energy demands of artificial intelligence (AI). He highlighted how energy consumption for AI data centers is skyrocketing. "To run a certain data center for AI is as much power as it takes to power cities like Chicago, Atlanta, and New York City,” Walsh explained.
He sees this as a critical issue. AI’s demand for energy will far exceed what solar, wind, and battery storage can provide. "You’re looking at one, two, three gigawatts to support a million or two million people per operation at a data center,” Walsh said. “Huge quantities of constant, 24-hour-a-day power.” This is something he believes green energy, as it currently stands, just can’t handle.
Solar, Wind, and Battery Storage: Not the Future
Walsh isn’t just critical of the way the green energy agenda is being handled. He believes it’s unrealistic to think solar and wind can meet the energy needs of the future, especially when it comes to supporting data centers for AI.
"The reality is, you can’t supply that with solar, wind, and battery storage. It’s just not going to happen in the next 10 to 15 years,” he said bluntly. He stressed that the only viable option for large-scale power generation is advanced gas-fired power plants. "The only way to meet this demand is with combined-cycle, gas-fired power plants,” he added.
In his eyes, the push for green energy is not only ineffective—it’s also wasteful and expensive. He points out that these renewable sources are intermittent, only providing power for four to seven hours a day. "It costs five to ten times more than using gas to generate power,” Walsh stated.
Dismantling the Green Energy Incentives
Walsh also called for a major overhaul of U.S. energy policy, particularly in terms of incentives for solar, wind, and battery storage. He argued that these incentives only benefit large energy companies and lobbyists who push for policies that favor expensive, unreliable energy sources.
"We need a legislative agenda formed by the president to dismantle the incentives on wind, solar, and battery storage,” Walsh said. He’s pushing for a clear policy shift toward gas and coal for electricity generation. "Let’s get coal back on the map,” he urged.
A Strong Legislative Agenda: A Path Forward
Walsh is confident that these changes can happen with the right leadership. "We need to dismantle the EPA restrictions that are going to bar natural gas by 2035 for power generation,” he explained. He’s advocating for the re-inclusion of high-efficiency coal as a qualified energy source, which could help meet the country’s power needs.
One of his key recommendations is using tariffs to offset incentives for renewable energy sources. "We can impose tariffs on solar panels and wind turbines, especially those coming from China,” he said, emphasizing the importance of reducing reliance on foreign-made energy technology.
A Bold Shift for U.S. Energy Policy
Dave Walsh’s conversation with Steve Bannon paints a picture of what he sees as a much-needed shift in U.S. energy policy. His critique of the green energy agenda is clear: it’s unrealistic, expensive, and unsustainable in its current form. To meet future energy demands, Walsh believes the U.S. must focus on natural gas and coal.
With the growing demands of artificial intelligence and the inability of renewables to keep up, Walsh is calling for stronger leadership and legislative action. The U.S. needs a strategic overhaul of its energy policy to ensure reliable, affordable power for the future. It’s time for a new energy agenda—one that doesn’t rely on the green promises of the past but embraces the energy sources that can truly power the future.
