As an analyst of all things media, you know you are in for an special treat when editors surreptitiously change a headline after already uploading it online.
One’s curiosity is — obviously — instantly aroused.
Articles you may not have given a second-glance to will get a more profound reading as you try to work out what slipped past the censors this time.
In the case I’m writing about today, the matter is even more curious when the offending journalist and the censor are the same person.
The Atlantic published its May cover story this week, by two neocon warhorses — Ann Applebaum and editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg.
Of note, the cover illustration itself was designed by Bono. The Bono.
The article was originally entitled "The Case for the Total Liberation of Ukraine”.
Within a few hours, this had been sneakily revised to "Zelensky’s Plan to Defeat Russia — And Take Back Crimea”
I might never had noticed, were it not for the fact I had opened the article on my browser, and then when I came back to read the article a couple of hours later (and here I confess to a somewhat autistic habit of always refreshing the browser of an article before reading it) lo and behold, the screen instantly became completely different!
At this point, I went back to the Atlantic’s homepage, where they hadn’t yet updated the new title — at which point I immediately made screenshots for posterity! 😂
I guess the original was considered, with retrospect, to be too honest about the war lobby’s secret — but actual — agenda for prolonging the new ForeverWar.
They know, of course, that "total liberation” would include Russia handing back Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea to Ukraine — and that would never be accepted by Russia in any eventual ceasefire negotiation.
Which is why the US MIC wants to cement that as Ukraine’s red line — thus guaranteeing another bellic cow they can then milk for the next two decades.
And — to coin a phrase — from the US MIC’s lips to the Atlantic’s ear. These people are the journalistic (I hesitate to use the word) equivalent of Lindsey Graham. They never met a war they didn’t like — and the more expensive, pointless and destructive, the better.
I have some news for them. Far from two decades of new war money-tree shaking, come 2024 it all ends for them.
Should you want to read the article for yourself, here’s the link.
Savour the opening words, in all their breathless, overblown, hyperbolic —but fundamentally deceitful — unglory:
The future of the democratic world will be determined by whether the Ukrainian military can break the stalemate and drive Russia out of its territory.
"The future of the democratic world”! 😂
I have a more honest headline for our two grifting, warmongering hacks — Ukraine: The Neocons’ Last Stand”.
Hey WarRoom, enjoy your program every day when I can. It’s good to get a European perspective of what is being played out across the pond as we like to say here in Canada. I like the way Ben covers his reporting & comes across in a fair & independent manner. It’s important to me that we get our information as unbiased as possible. I no longer watch any mainstream media at all so, I depend on you guys to provide me with correct information so I can make informed decisions. Thanks,
