EMMA WATERS (GUEST):Yeah, absolutely. So you take egg and sperm, you create embryos. About 40% of all clinics allow for something called pre implantation genetic testing, which is where you take a couple of cells from t he embryo, biopsy them, and then you analyze them to understand what are the potential health outcomes. So things like Down syndrome or Tay Sachs disease, and that is pretty common across IVF cycles today.
The embryo with almost near accuracy. I always like to say there is no gender confusion in a fertility clinic lab. They know exactly what they are promising you. But there are a number of companies that have actually moved to take that further. So you have Orchid, you have Nucleus Genomics, you have Parasite funded by all of these same Silicon Valley billionaires that we talked about in the introduction.
And what they are doing is they are taking that a whole step further. They are not only looking at basic single gene outcomes, but they are looking at over 1200 potential health conditions, and then they are predicting the likelihood that your embryo, your child, could have things like heart disease or diabetes or male pattern baldness or the height, the personality, the looks. You could choose a docile child. You could choose an energetic child, a narcissistic one, a competitive one.
And they are promising couples that just with their gene analyzing technology they can actually predict and promise you a certain kind of child. So it is not only about healing infertility, which is why a lot of people go to IVF. It is about selecting a certain kind of child that fits their own preferences.
