Philip Reeker, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, is scheduled to testify today in front of Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff’s secretive impeachment inquiry.
He is the latest witness in this week’s string of career civil service officials opting to appear before the partisan process of impeachment.
Episode 6 of the War Room: Impeachment podcast analyzes the significance of this development and co-host Raheem Kassam predicts a potential message of his testimony: placing blame on the president’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, or at least the so-called “parallel track” of foreign policy as it pertains to Ukraine.
Kassam quotes Daniel Fried, former Americans diplomat, describing Reeker as “coming from the school of Marie Yovanovitch school of professionalism” and “utterly nonpartisan.”
According to Kassam, being “in the civil service effectively means they think they’re right. The president exists only to give them jobs, so they can implement policy they believe.”
And the “policy” they believe aligns with the “globalist, career foreign service world view“:
“Reeker is a guy who is fully subscribed to the Yovanovitch school of thought. Marie Yovanovitch is what the media refers to as the “ousted” U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. “Ousted” in the sense that the administration didn’t like what she was doing. There are all sorts of theories that go around about Yovanovitch and what she was doing, who she was talking to, whether she was implementing Trump policy or not, and those are judgement calls for the administration to make, frankly. That is at the full discretion of the president. But Yovanovitch had a particular globalist, career foreign service world view.”
Kassam continues: “This is somebody who believe that foreign policy, no matter who is in the White House, shouldn’t and doesn’t change.”
This background may influence Reeker’s testimony:
“That is where Reeker is going to approach this from. Reeker is going to try and point fingers at Rudy Giuliani because he is the one they accuse of having this parallel track of foreign policy going on across Ukraine and Europe, and he’s the one they blame for attacking Marie Yovanovitch and getting her fired,” said Kassam.
The predictions were right: “Halfway through the show, Rudy was the top three stories on CNN, not related to Reeker, but you see how this all plays out. They know they’ve got a leak.”
