War Room exposed how elites — on the left and right — made the wrong bet on China, and allowed the Chinese Communist Party to steal America’s prosperity.
“America did not transform China, China transformed America and the West,” Bannon said, Tuesday.
Clyde Prestowitz, the author of The World Turned Upside Down: America, China, and the Struggle for Global Leadership, joined the show for a deep dive into how American elites led to the rise of the Chinese Communist Party.
Prestowitz explains how Communist China was on the verge of collapse in 1989 — but George H. W. Bush kept the regime alive.
Though H.W. Bush knew full well the dangers of the communist regime after serving as ambassador to China, director of the CIA, and vice president, he did not clamp down on the CCP.
“This guy had as much information about the CCP and how they ran things as possible,” Bannon said. “What possibly given the fact the Soviet Union was imploding and this is the moment you could destroy global communism. What was it that had [Brent] Scowcroft and Bush think that we’ve got to prop up this machine?”
“If the U.S. had backed democracy…the CCP would have imploded,” Prestowitz said.
Prestowitz said America’s elites all made the same bet: that free trade with China would lead to more freedom. But greed and catastrophic errors led to the opposite.
“I was there when the bet was being made,” he said. “Nobody in the U.S. thought there was a bet. Everyone thought it was a sure thing, free trade…inevitably would lead to freedom and democracy.”
Prestowitz said today the problem is America’s corporations who don’t view themselves as Americans, but globalists.
“The West particularly the U.S. was just kidding themselves,” he said. “I blame it partly on our businessmen who were just so greedy, the China experts, they totally missed it…and I blame it on both political parties who were superficial.”
Now the future of the U.S. is “really up in the air.”
“We need a rejuvenation of the American people,” Prestowitz said. “And we need a reinforcement of the fundamentals, what’s America about? It’s about human rights, freedom.
“I don’t think kids are taught citizenship anymore in schools,” he said. “We get a lot of woke history but we don’t get real history.”
Prestowitz said America must get back to unity on values, instead of ripping each other apart.
“The U.S. is the least racist county around the world,” he said. “I’ve lived in Asia, I’ve lived in Latin America. It’s so crazy that we’re tearing us apart on these issues.”
